Which beeswax should you buy?
Use this table to narrow down your choice. Confirm the product's suitability against your recipe, process or specification before ordering.
What you are planning Format to consider What to check
Small trial batches or several recipes Pellets in a smaller pack Required colour, wax percentage and total batch size
Larger batches with equipment for portioning wax A beeswax block Net wax weight and how you will divide it
A pale-coloured finished product White beeswax pellets Processing details and effect on your formulation
A project where the wax's yellow colour suits the result Yellow beeswax pellets or a block Colour variation and your preferred format
Regular production A larger pack, such as 5 kg Cost per kilogram, consistency and delivery cost
Foundation for bee frames Foundation sheets Frame size and wax suitability for hive use
Beeswax blocks or pellets: what is the difference?
The format mainly changes how you handle and portion the wax. Assess composition and suitability separately.
Beeswax blocks
A block can be a practical choice when you use wax in larger batches and have a way to divide and weigh it. Bee Ware's 1 kg beeswax block gives you a straightforward starting quantity.
Think about your process before ordering. If each batch needs only a small amount, allow for the work involved in cutting or portioning a block.
Beeswax pellets
Pellets are convenient when you want to weigh small amounts or adjust a recipe in stages. You can measure the quantity you need and keep the remainder packed away.
For repeated small batches, that convenience may justify a different price per kilogram. Compare the cost alongside the time you spend preparing each batch.
Compare yellow and white beeswax pellets.
Yellow or white beeswax: which should you choose?
Rendered beeswax can have different shades of yellow. Commercial white beeswax is produced by lightening yellow wax; the FAO/JECFA beeswax specification describes bleaching using oxidising agents or sunlight. Processing can also affect aroma. These are general differences, so ask about the process used for the particular wax you are buying.
Choose the colour that suits your finished product. Yellow wax may influence the colour of a pale formulation. White wax may be worth considering when you want a lighter result, but test a small batch before committing to a larger order.
Colour alone does not establish purity or suitability. Check the supplier's description and supporting information, especially when your project requires a defined grade.
For technical background, see the FAO/JECFA beeswax specification and the FAO guide to beeswax.
How much does beeswax cost in South Africa?
Compare beeswax by cost per kilogram, then add delivery. Pack price on its own can be misleading when the quantities differ.
Cost per kilogram = pack price ÷ pack weight in kilograms.
For a 500 g pack, divide the price by 0.5. For a 5 kg pack, divide by 5. This gives you a common basis for comparison.

5 kg yellow beeswax pellets
A larger pack may offer a lower unit cost, but it only helps if you can use that quantity. For a first attempt, buying enough for a trial can be a better decision than committing to bulk wax before you have tested your process.
Five questions to ask before buying beeswax
1. Is this beeswax or a wax blend?
Ask whether the product contains added waxes or other ingredients. If your recipe calls for beeswax, make sure the supplier's description matches that requirement. For a specification-critical order, ask what composition or batch information is available.
2. Is it prepared for the intended use?
Explain whether you are making candles, working with wood, formulating a cosmetic product or preparing foundation for bee frames. Request the relevant specification or documentation when a particular grade is required. A general beeswax listing should be checked against the requirements of your application.
3. What is the net wax weight?
Use the amount of wax in the pack for your cost calculation. A shipping weight may include packaging. If the title and weight information disagree, ask the supplier to confirm the net quantity before paying.
4. Can you test a smaller quantity first?
For candles, test your chosen wax with the wick and candle design. For formulated products, make a small batch and assess the result against your recipe. A successful trial gives you a better basis for a larger order.
5. What is the complete order cost?
Check the wax price, delivery charge, applicable tax information and any collection arrangements. If you order regularly, keep a record of the product and quantity used so future purchases are easier to compare.
How much beeswax do you need?
Work backwards from your recipe or batch plan.
If a 1 kg batch contains 10% beeswax, it needs 100 g of wax. Five identical batches need 500 g. This is a quantity calculation; use the beeswax percentage specified for your own product.
Once you know the requirement, choose a pack size that covers your planned trials or production. Buying to a batch plan makes it easier to control both cost and leftover stock.
