South Africa has not succeeded in preventing the spread of AFB or American Foulbrood which is a spore that eventually will kill off the brood of the beehive. It is virtually indestructible and only fire will bring an end to any infested beehive or colony.
The challenge is that the AFM spore travels in the honey and with the bee. If any contaminated honey is left outdoors or transferred into a clean honey bee colony by a foraging worker that colony will also fall prey to the spore over time.
We have now introduced a field testing kit for AFB which is available to South African beekeepers and surrounding countries as well. The main areas of concern are the Western Cape. There is much concern over the levels of affected bee colonies and apiaries, and therefore, an AFB diagnostic testing kit could be beneficial to confirm the diagnosis.
We are the only licenced suppliers of the product in South Africa.
