Full-body protective clothing for practical beekeeping

Working a colony requires protective clothing that covers the beekeeper properly while still allowing enough movement for lifting boxes, handling frames and completing hive inspections.

The Bee Ware bee suit provides full-body coverage, with the exception of the hands and feet. Pair it with suitable bee gloves and closed gum boots before working with a colony.

The detachable round veil keeps the mesh away from the face while allowing the beekeeper to look down into the hive. The veil and hood can be detached when required.

No protective garment can guarantee that every sting will be prevented. Correct sizing, careful dressing, suitable gloves and boots, and checking every closure before approaching a hive remain essential.

Choosing your bee suit size

For the best practical fit, select a bee suit at least one size larger than the clothing size you normally wear.

A slightly roomier suit provides:

• Space for normal clothing underneath
• Better freedom of movement when bending and lifting
• A layer of air between your clothing and the suit
• Allowance for possible shrinkage during washing

Do not choose a tight-fitting bee suit. A tight suit can restrict movement and hold the fabric closer to the body.

Before approaching a hive

Before every inspection:

1. Inspect the fabric, seams, zips and veil for damage.
2. Confirm that the veil is correctly attached.
3. Close the chest and ankle zips completely.
4. Check the wrist and ankle areas for exposed gaps.
5. Put on appropriate bee gloves and closed boots.
6. Check that no skin is exposed.
7. Ask another person to check the back of the suit where practical.

Do not use the suit if the fabric, veil, seams or closures are damaged.

Washing and care

• Cold wash the bee suit.
• Detach the veil before washing where appropriate.
• Follow any instructions on the sewn-in care label.
• Some shrinkage may occur.
• Check the suit and veil after washing and before the next use.
• Store the suit clean and dry.

Choosing a larger size helps accommodate normal clothing, movement and possible shrinkage.
